In English this term we will be taking part in discussions and debates which will lead into writing balanced arguments. We will also be writing non-chronological reports linked to our science topic "Earth and Space". There will also be the opportunity to read and retell stories from Ancient Maya.

Alongside this we will continue to work on spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Guided Reading:

.All the children in Years 5 and 6 take part in a guided reading session once a week. This is followed by another session during the week where follow up questions are completed.

In maths this term we will be

  • learning how to read and write Roman numerals
  • finding out about negative numbers
  • carrying out division calculations using mental and written methods
  • converting between different units of measure
  • naming, measuring, drawing angles and finding missing angles

We will be continuing with our "Earth and Space" topic. So far we have found out how we get day and night and the seasons. This term, we are going to find out about the solar system and phases of the moon. We will also carry out our own research about an aspect of space and present this as a non-chronological report.

Our topic this term is "Ancient Maya". We will be trying to answer these questions

  • Who were the ancient Maya?
  • When did they live?
  • Where did they live?
  • How did they live? [social hierarchy, food, clothing, buildings, jobs, education]
  • What were their beliefs?
  • What did they invent?

Our art/D.T. work will also link with this topic. This will include making masks, jewellery, calendars and food.

Year 5 and 6 will be swimming during Wednesday's P.E. sessions. On Fridays this term, we will be doing Forest School activities.

Our question for this term is - Does the community of the Mosque help Muslims lead better lives?

We will think about what community means to us and what an ideal community would look like. We will find out about how Muslims pray and worship and what role the Mosque and its community has.

We follow the Letter Join handwriting scheme. For more information about this and about what your child will be learning throughout the year follow the link below. You will also find detail of how to log in and practice this at home. Handwriting is a very important skill so any practice at home would be greatly appreciated!

Homework for this term will consist of a weekly  grammar and punctuation activity chosen from a pack. There will also be an ongoing maths project investigating which breakfast cereal is the healthiest. Year 6 will also have a weekly arithmetic sheet.

The children are also expected to read daily, learn their spellings and practise times tables.
