Key Stage 1 - Year 1 and 2

Welcome to Key Stage One!

We have had a fantastic start to the year and all of the children have settled in brilliantly to the new routines! I have seen such a lot of hard work and focus already which is a great sign for the year ahead. We have been busy starting our ‘Frozen Planet’ topic and have exciting ideas for what we’d like to find out about. In English, we have been retelling the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers using our own story maps. In Maths, we have been focusing on place value and ordering numbers. In Topic, we have been looking at what makes a good explorer and which animals live in the Antarctic.

Frozen Planet

Our topic for the Autumn Term is Frozen Planet! We will learn about Ernest Shackleton, a famous explorer, and the wildlife and landscape of Antarctica. We will also use Antarctic themed texts in our writing.

Please have a look at our Autumn Term overview to see some of the exciting things we will be doing.

In the first week of term, we set ourselves some goals that we would like to achieve before the Christmas break and discussed how we might achieve them! We have also been working on developing our learning attitudes and resilience. Please help us with this by helping us to celebrate when we have tried again at a tricky task or had a go at a big challenge. We have also been learning about how taking on a challenge helps us to ‘make our brains stronger’ and that ‘making mistakes make us smarter’ through our new friend Mojo who will be helping us with this all term.

Daily Routines

Please have a look at our weekly timetable. It is important to note that these timings are flexible to allow for variation in lessons, visitors, trips and other learning opportunities.

All of KS1 have music with Mrs Fell on a Monday morning. She will also be taking the register and messages at this time.

We will have Forest School on a Thursday afternoon and will be out of school for lots of this. Please make sure that your child has an appropriate change of clothes, as detailed on the letter, ready for this each week.

We will be doing PE on Wednesdays and Fridays, please make sure PE kits are in school on these days. We recommend children bring their PE kit on a Monday to ensure it is ready.

Your child's PE kit should contain shorts, t-shirt, tracksuit and trainers.

Please make sure all items are named.

Children who wear earrings should be able to remove these themselves or be able to cover them.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday by Miss Hodgkins ready for practice at home for a spelling test on the following Wednesday.

Reading at home is a key part of helping your child to develop confidence and comprehension skills. Please note when you have read at home in their pink reading record and discuss the stories you have read together.

For more information about supporting your child with reading at home, please look at our guidance document.

Homework books will be given out on Thursday to be brought back to school the following Monday. Your child's homework includes daily reading to an adult, weekly spellings and one other weekly activity in their homework book. This term we are focusing on reading and each of the activities will be based on their own home reading.
