Welcome

News

(2.7.16) We enjoyed a great tennis taster session this week. Charlie, the coach, was very impressed with our skills! Photos below.

English: After the excitement of last Thursday, we have begun to write our own version of the destruction of our classroom. Strange tales to come.

Maths: we have been working out the area and perimeter of shapes and places.

RE: we looked at many different prayers and had to decide whether we could sort them into different kinds: confessional, thanksgiving, supplication, intercession or prayers of adoration. We found that many prayers fit into many categories.

Computing: this week in photography, we explored perspective. We had fun experimenting with where we stand in a photo, foreground or background, to change the size of our subjects. Photos below.

Topic: what makes Clifton Hampden great? What are the problems in our local area? After the threat of flooding, traffic was decided to be top of our priority of list of things to be addressed. As such, we are in the process of collecting data to prove our theory. Good luck counting cars for homework this week. STAY SAFE.

DT: We have begun to make our moving vehicles. The saws have been out and very accurate measurements have been taken. The bases are made, the axels are prepared, the rest is to be continued...

(26.6.16) Play practise is well and truly underway. All year 4s must have learnt their lines off by heart for Monday as Mrs Wake will be calling them to rehearsal regularly from now on.

English: Editing done and final drafts printed, our Stone Age stories are completed and in good time too as disaster struck the classroom on Thursday morning. That's right, we suspect some creatures from an alternate reality have been accessing our classroom via portals. We shall be investigating this some more next week and shall keep you all updated. Photos below.

Maths: We have been investigating length using a variety of equipment. We have aimed to be accurate and been recording lengths with a growing understanding of decimals.

Topic: We have identified symbols used on OS maps for important buildings and places. We then used this to identify key places in our local area. Photos below.

(17.6.16) We had a bit of a mixed up week with topic in the morning and maths on a Friday!

To start the week, we enjoyed celebrating the Queen's 90th Birthday by having assemblies of celebrations and in the afternoon our own parade. The hats/crowns/tiaras you made were fabulous - what a lot of time and effort you made! Please scroll down for photos.

English: We have been writing our Stone Age time hop stories making sure that we have been using expanded noun phrases and a variety of time adverbials to move our story along. They really are quite exciting!

Maths: Can you spot equivalent fractions? Using equipment and/ or our times tables knowledge we have been making equivalent fractions. Some of us have been learning about decimals and their link to fractions while some of us have been undergoing number investigations.

Topic: We have been creating our own maps of Clifton Hampden including a comprehensive key and photographing key buildings and areas (man-made and natural landmarks). Please scroll down for our mapping adventures.

RE: Our big question this term is 'does prayer change anything?' We looked at the different ways Christians pray to God and had a go at a bit of uplifting singing - Oh happy day! (oh happy day!)

Computing: We are undergoing some photography exploring perspective, angle and backgrounds. Please scroll down for photos.

(11.6.16) Can you believe we are into Term 6? I certainly can't! I hope you all had a wonderful half term. It was lovely to see so many of you at the village fete. We have a ridiculous amount to pack into this term with lots of practise underway for our school play. So lets get going...

English: This Term is purely focused on story writing. Our primary focuses are writing stories that make sense with exciting plot lines. We will be developing our ability to paint a picture (using description) for our readers so they can clearly envisage the story we have in our head. We have planned a 'time hop' story where a character is sent back in time to the Stone Age or Iron Age. I can't wait to see what adventures occur!

Maths: Mental maths this week had a focus on counting on to find the difference for numbers close together like 36 - 29 = and also to help work out missing number problems. This was then followed by fractions; how to read, write, understand and spot common equivalent fractions using our times tables. Yes, those all important, helpful, imperative times tables - keep learning them troops!

Science: Continuing with our topic of fantastic forces, we have now turned our attention to magnets (who doesn't love them?!).

Topic: we shall be undertaking lots of field studies in our local area. First order of business was to understand creating maps from a birds-eye view and to use symbols to identify key unmovable features on a map. The children creating sketch maps of the playground and have been tasked with doing the same of their bedroom for their homework. Photos below.

PE: Thursday's focus with me is athletics and sports day practise while Mr Mills, on Fridays, will start with tag rugby.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU ALL HAVE YOUR CROWNS OR PATRIOTIC HATS HERE ON MONDAY FOR THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY PICNIC.

Class Information

Your child will have P.E. on a Wednesday and Friday. During the terms when we do forest school, we will not be doing P.E. on a Friday.

P.E. on a Wednesday changes term to term but you will be informed at the beginning of each term whether your child needs a P.E. kit or swimming kit.

Your child's P.E. kit should be weather appropriate including a change of T-shirt, socks and a jumper.

Please ensure all items are named.

Your child will be given spellings to learn on a Monday and will be tested on the following Monday. If children do not get a sufficient amount correct in their test, they will come back on Wednesday lunch time to be tested again. If your child is doing phonics with me on a Mon - Thurs morning, their spellings will be linked to the sounds we have learnt.

Homework is handed out on a Thursday and needs to be brought back into school on the following  Monday. Your child will usually have 2 pieces of homework to complete.

We ask all parents to encourage their child to read every day. It is still important for many children to read with an adult, as well as independently, to ensure they are sounding words out correctly, understanding new vocabulary and ensuring a good comprehension of the book.

In addition to this, it is important for children to practice their maths skills such as learning their times tables, telling the time and using money. These topics are covered within school, however, they are tricky to learn and retain. The more practice your child has with these 3 aspects of maths the easier your child will be able to apply them into all areas of their learning.

In our class we have a mental maths test every Monday morning. We shall start this later on in Term 1.  It is comprised of multiplication questions, doubling/halving, shape, word problems, time, addition, subtraction and other areas of the maths curriculum we have been learning about the week before.

We have multiplication flash cards available in the classroom.

Please see the schools calculation booklet which we sent home for other practical ideas to help your child with their maths. If you have any questions please come and see me at any time!

Mary had a little lamb, his fleece was... brown as chocolate, and everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go. He followed her to school one day, which was usually against the rule, It made the children laugh and play to see a lamb at school.
