Term 5

Week 5: 22/5/17

 

CLL: This week we have been writing instructions. To help us think about the order of instructions we made playdough. This really helped us the next day when we sequenced our pictures and wrote our instructions.

 

Phonics: We are continuing with our phase 4 learning. This week we have been using the following sounds nt/nk/ft (hunt, paint, ink, junk, soft, gift etc.) to read and write as many words as possible.

 

PD: On Wednesday we have continued with ‘Dance’ and our Friday sessions continue to be outside focussing on ball skills. Handwriting practise - this week we have continued to focus on our cursive one armed robot and curly caterpillar letters.

 

Maths: This week we have focussed on number patterns and sequencing numbers. We have practised our counting forwards and back, but also focussed on starting at any point to count forwards and backwards.

 

UoW: The children have continued their learning about seaside holidays in the past and begun working collaboratively to make a large display in the classroom. During RE we have been learning about stained glass windows and had a go at making our own windows. Please see our Forest School page to see this week's learning.

 

ED: We have continued with Dance on a Wednesday afternoon. During Art we have worked collaboratively to make a large display in the classroom and during RE we have been using mixed media (tracing paper and tissue paper) to make our own stained glass windows.

Week 4: 15/5/17

 

CLL: We had an excellent time during Bookfeast this week. We shared stories written by Suzanne Burton and then went to visit her in Oxford. Please see latest news for pictures of Thursday’s trip.

 

Phonics – This week we have begun phase 4. The children are now learning set sounds which are spoken very quickly and sound as if they are only one sound. This week we have worked on words with st/nd/mp.

 

PD: On Wednesday we have continued with ‘Dance’ and our Friday sessions continue to be outside focussing on ball skills. Handwriting practise - this week we have continued to focus on our cursive one armed robot letter.

 

Maths: This week we have revisited addition, and also been thinking about making 10 in lots of different ways.

 

UoW: The children have been learning about seaside holidays in the past; finding out about travel, clothing and activities that families took part in.

 

ED: We have continued with Dance on a Wednesday afternoon. The children are keen to investigate moving in different ways and are able to respond really well to the changes in tempo. During Art we have been learning about a famous painting called ‘The Great Wave’ and creating our own version.

Week 3: 8/5/17

 

CLL: We have continued with our story: The Snail and the Whale written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Have a look at our fantastic pictures below – this week we have been deciding on alternative settings which the creatures could visit. We will use these next week when we innovate our own story.

 

Phonics - Wow! This week saw using coming to the end of phase 3. Next week we begin phase 4 (which brings it’s own set of tricky words!), phase 4 looks at letters which can be sounded out, but the letters are spoken very quickly in a word and often cause lots of trouble when sounding out words to write. Well done to the children for coping so well with their second spelling test – keep up the good work! Please send books in on Wednesday, where new spellings are set.

 

PD: The children are loving indoor ‘Dance’ for our Wednesday PE sessions. This week we have been using a piece of music from Harry Potter and the children have been moving in response to this. We also had time to enjoy one or two traditional party dances (musical statues and bumps). Friday sessions are now outside and we will focus with ball skills with Mr Aplin and Miss Thorne from Ignite. Handwriting practise on this week has continued to focus on our cursive curly caterpillar letters – we are learning to form our letters with a lead in (these letters begin by starting on the line).

 

Maths: This week we have continued with weighing! The children have thoroughly enjoyed using the balance scales to investigate how to make them balance. They have shown fantastic skills and their mathematical vocabulary cornering weighing is developing all the time.

 

UoW: The children have been thinking and learning about the similarities between Clifton Hampden and the seaside. Please see our Forest School bag to see what we have been up to this week.

 

ED: We have continued with Dance on a Wednesday afternoon. The children are keen to investigate moving in different ways and are able to respond really well to the changes in tempo. During Music we continue to work with Mrs Fell practising our skipping and learning a dance using the maypole.  We have continued our learning about warm and cold colours during art and have begun our own Claude Monet paintings.

Week 2: 1/5/17

CLL: We have begun our new story: The Snail and the Whale written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The children have really enjoyed listening and retelling this story. Phonics - We are very nearly at the end of phase 3 – the children are working hard with the revision of this week’s sounds (oi/er/igh/air/ear/ure). Spellings – children now have weekly spelling. Books come home on a Wednesday with new words, these are made up of words which can be sounded out and at least one tricky word. Over the next few weeks we will settle into the routine of a weekly spelling test. Please encourage your child to practise their words.

Maths: This week we have been investigating weighing! The children have been learning to use the language heavy/heavier/heaviest, light/lighter/lightest, balance, same. They have considered how heavy items feel (without seeing the item – hence the wrapped presents!), deciding if an item is heavier or lighter. At the end of the week we used the balance scales to investigate weighing our items.

 

UoW: This week we have been learning about the key features of the seaside (sea, sand, pebbles, pier, lighthouse etc.)

 

Expressive Art and Design:  This week we have been working on responding to music in different ways (see PD).  We have also been learning about warm and cold colours and using this knowledge to paint different sea creatures.

We have enjoyed our first week back at school following our Easter break.  The children were all very excited to share their holiday adventures with Ms Smith and I and we produced some fantastic writing.  At the end of the week we had fun with rhymes and learning the middle and end sound stay the same.  During Maths we have been learning about repeating pattern and symmetry.  We have also begun our new topic - Seasides.  This week we have been sharing our experiences of the seaside and thinking about what we would like to find out about the seaside.   Please see our Forest School page to catch up on our learning for the week. 

 

During the Easter break our 2 guinea pigs arrived and settled into their new home safely.  They are still very timid and the children have been fantastic around them.  The School Council are busy collecting name suggestions from the children.
