Our Topic Web for Term 1: Bat Class Topic Web - Summer Term
Please read daily with your child and help them to practice their spellings daily. Make homework fun by completing activities together. Try to help your child to become independent in organising themselves for school. Most importantly talk to your children about what they are learning and how they are learning in class.
This term we will be focusing mainly on fiction writing. We will be writing our own adventure stories about adventures! We will be looking closely at editing and revising our work in order to improve the quality. In addition, we will explore the features of these types of writing and look at structure and SPaG as we go, including using commas to make a list, a range of suffixes and apostrophes for omission and posession. We will also explore our topic work through non-fiction writing.
Please encourage your children when writing at home to use their best handwriting and good spelling, punctuation and grammar to ensure we are always practicing these skills whenever we write. The more we practise, the easier it gets!
All children in Key Stage One complete a daily guided reading or phonics session, where activities vary according to our needs. Some of these activities are, for example, listening to an audio book, silent reading or reading comprehension.
Thanks to our very valuable volunteer readers, we aim for all children to be heard read every day where possible. Please can you ensure your child brings their reading diary into school every day, so we can record in it when we read with them at school.
This term we will be focusing on measure. We will explore length, height, mass and capacity. We will also be practicing telling the time. Our problem solving skills are coming along well and we will be pushing on with applying our mathematical knowledge across the four operations.
Our Science focus is on Rocks. The children will also be experimenting with balance, push, pull and mass. We will be exploring the most famous inventors of the Victorian era too.
Our topic this term is Victorian Wonderland! We will be exploring the Victorian era, looking at how Oxford looked during that time and finding out about a famous Victorian Alice!
Bat Class will be having P.E on Friday afternoons with Mr Ashby. Please make sure your child wears their P.E kit into school on Fridays, but it is also helpful to have them the rest of the week, in case we do any extra unexpected P.E!
Bat Class will be learning about Easter, Passover and Ramadan this term. We will then focus on Jesus' authority and what that means for Christians.
We follow the Letter Join handwriting scheme. For more information about this and about what your child will be learning throughout the year follow the link below. You will also find detail of how to log in and practice this at home. Handwriting is a very important skill so any practice at home would be greatly appreciated!
Your child's homework is to read to an adult daily and have a comment written in their reading record. They must also practice their spellings daily in one of the ways suggested in their homework folder or any other creative way they can think of. Finally, they must practice their number bonds and 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables daily (and 4 and 8 for year 3!). Any other homework is communicated via Class Dojo. There will be tasks as necessary and the hand in dates for these will be clearly communicated on these sheets, as well as Parent Mailed where possible.
